How do we decide to live our lives??? With all the concerns for our environmental future I do think there is a shift in our thinking as we become more aware of what we could do as individuals to make a difference. Bit by bit and I think it all adds up.
Check out my latest video for a quick insight of how you could help protect our environmental future.
I am certainly not asking you to hold a placard in any environmental protest or to become a tree hugger, simply to understand the impact that you would be having or could be having on our kids’ future.
For instance, did you know that deciding to use cloth nappies can actually make a huge difference – one disposable nappy may take up to 500 years to decompose! I did not know that and am still gobsmacked.
Another interesting fact … Australians contribute approximately 2 billion used disposables nappies in landfill each year. Wowzers! On top of this, the manufacturing of disposable nappies uses far more energy, raw materials and water than any reusable alternative like a BellaBott Nappy.
Now I bet you have never thought about this as it certainly didn’t cross my mind … Experts are unsure about the long term effects of the continual dumping of disposable nappies and the landfill contamination issues arising from this.
What do you do with your pooy disposable nappy?
Do you put it in a nappy bag and throw it in the bin? I know I have done this, especially travelling and I know I am not alone. In fact most parents using disposables don’t realise or simply do not dispose of poo into the toilet as recommended on the packaging. So instead of poo being treated in sewage systems it is being dumped into landfill where bacteria and viruses seep into our groundwater. This is not a pleasant thought. The next time you are drinking some spring water or your kids are playing in a beautiful creek try not to think about this.
A common misconception with reusable nappies is that the washing and drying of nappies outweighs any environmental benefit but let me assure you that this is not the case. It can actually reduce your environmental impact by up to 40%! That is a huge difference we all could be making.
So why don’t you give it a go … Help protect our environment and ensure your baby’s health is cared for.
Would love to know if you are aware of any of these disposable nappy facts?
Please feel free to share as this may help someone you know make their decision.
